Character Name: Castus
Race: Human
Age: 29
Sex: Male
Patron: Corrlinn Thalon
Gift: Battle magic
Weapons: Longsword
Occupation/Class: Paladin
Appearance:
Castus is a very large man, tall with a broad frame and sun-darkened skin. His serious demeanor and lifestyle has prematurely aged him, giving him the beginnings of frown-lines. Because of this, his expression occasionally looks more severe than he perhaps intends - a thing that's not helped by his rather hard green eyes. He wears his dark hair loose (and often somewhat unkempt) to just above his shoulders, and he's just noted the beginnings of grey at his temples. This doesn't seem to bother him overmuch, and he makes no attempt to hide it. A last notable feature is his left hand, where he lost his ring finger to the second knuckle and the last joint of his middle finger to a sword stroke a decade ago - this is often disguised by his gloves.
He tends to not dress as fancy as other paladins might, giving him more the look of a hedge knight than a minor lord of the church. His armor too is simple, favoring strength over decoration, and bears no sigil other than the bright holy symbol he uses as a cloak pin. This isn't to say that he can't be dressed up, of course...his responsibilities to the church occasionally require it. He just doesn't prefer it.
Personality:
The paladin leads a strict lifestyle of piety, choosing to shun the world's distractions in the name of his god - although this was not always the case with him, but rather a change dating back to about ten years earlier. He keeps only a small amount of personal possessions, his only allowances to excess being the extraordinarily expensively-made symbol of his god and his book of holy verses. From this, one might infer that his veneration of Corrlin Thalon borders on obsession, but that assumption would be wrong...although, admittedly, not far from the mark. The reality of it is that, to Castus, the church is his family, and the only truth he's ever known. As such, he tends to rely greatly on his faith, and is an adamant defender of the sect and its people - there is nothing he would not do for their benefit and well-being.
This leads back to his pious nature. As a paladin, Castus recognizes that he's been put in a place of leadership, to shepherd in a way similar to that of the clerics. He has therefore sworn to always present himself as an example to the church's followers. At the same time, he recognizes that not all are made to serve in the same manner, and he only rarely makes any attempt to convert others, having decided long ago that destiny calls each person to their own god or goddess, and that it's only his place to offer aid and faith to those who seek it of him - leave the conversions to the clerics. Even though he may be considered 'lax' to some standards in that regard, he will still intervene in situations in which he feels uncomfortable having any part of...although, to a degree, he realizes that he will never personally be able to correct the wrongs of the world.
For his appearance, the paladin is not an overtly warlike person. He can more than hold his own in battle, and will do what is required of him boldly and without complaint, but he does not seek combat, and won't start a fight where a fight is not necessary.
History:
Grew up on the islands with mainly elves, fought in the war against drow ten or so years ago, recently escorted a friend to Therfis. More details pending once I get a chance to get the details of the game straight.
